Betsy Hart, National Foreign Language Center, University of Maryland

Betsy is the Director of National Outreach and Program Director for STARTALK. She directs the implementation of the STARTALK project tasks to ensure that they are conceptually on track, on time, and adhere to client requirements. She launched her career in higher education in Heidelberg, Germany, where she coordinated the scheduling of classes and professors throughout Europe for University of Maryland's University College Overseas Programs. Betsy holds an undergraduate degree in Education from Marywood University, a master's degree in Business Administration from Boston University, and recently completed a post‐graduate certificate program in Leadership and Management at the University of Maryland.

Anna Jacobson, National Foreign Language Center, University of Maryland

Anna is a Senior Research Associate for STARTALK.  She received her PhD from Indiana University-Bloomington in Foreign and Second Language Education in 2009.  Her interest in foreign languages (and LCTLs in particular) was inspired by her grandfather, a Heritage speaker of Norwegian.  While Anna does not speak Norwegian, she does speak Russian and Spanish, and has taught both these languages in secondary schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.  Anna is also an experienced language teacher trainer, having taught classes in language education at Indiana University and the University of New Hampshire and having trained LCTL teachers at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA.

Mouna Mana, National Foreign Language Center, University of Maryland

Mouna is a Faculty Research Assistant for STARTALK.  Mouna earned her Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics & English, her Master’s in Education with a focus on cognitive development and second language acquisition, and her PhD is in second language literacy and formative assessment. She is an alumna of UCLA’s Graduate School of Education & Information Studies. Her areas of expertise are second/foreign language literacy, Arabic language education, language teacher professional development, and formative assessment. She has taught Arabic at the college level, privately, and at weekend community schools. She has previously trained Arabic language teachers online and in conventional workshops on various topics related to teaching Arabic as a foreign and heritage language. Mouna has contributed to various projects at the NFLC such as development of online learning material development for Read Arabic!. She is a native speaker of English, Arabic, and French.
